Late in `08

2008.12.10

Latest video installment of the Kovats kids, late in `08.

Bonus track: see the same video played to the Benny Hill theme song!

Damn you Vista!!

We (and by "we", I always mean my wife and I... though one of these days I'd love it to mean something like "me and the King of Zaire", or "the Pope and I" -  that'd be sweet) recently got matching laptops. It was so cute. She bought one, then persuaded me - a conversation taking about 2 minutes - to buy a second one for myself. It was effectively an arguement to make Anna feel better about her splurging, that I should go against my cheap nature and blow $500 more on myself as well. We're still financially wreckless - what the hey.

Anyhow, we get the laptops and along with them comes Windows Vista. I'm no Mac guy, nor am I some Microsoft "apologist" - I make due with what I have. In this case, I was initially OK with Vista. Seems to have an integrated firewall and access restriction for special system operations, and in general feels a bit safer.

However, one downside to Vista is half the damn software we own (or have obtained through Bulgarian connections) doesn't want to work on Vista. This includes my favorite video editing suite, Pinnacle Studio. So, I've put this little clip together using Windows Movie Maker.

Don't get me wrong; if I was 55 and putting together a needlessly flashy home movie of a trip to Santa Barbara, there'd be enough star wipes and squiggly fades in Windows Movie Maker to keep me endlessly content. For someone who wants a little more control over movie editting, the preinstalled app doesn't pass muster.

...

Although I will say that it amuses me that an iPod touch runs somewhere around $300 - $400... and for an extra $100, you could skip that chintzy piece of needless flash and go for a beefy 17" Toshiba laptop. Amazing how the economy of novelty works.

NOTE: Comments were broken before 12/12.

Sorry, I broke "production code", and lost your comments.

Also, you can watch the videos again

Apparently I'd set the videos to "private" status. Oops. They're fixed now.

I would humbly point out that an iPod Touch (my own personal instance of which has just returned from its second trial out in the wilds of traveling) can easily be held and used in one hand (while driving, no less), weighs next to nothing, can be slipped into a shirt pocket... and promiscuously joins every wireless network around with even the weakest of signals. The functions it is designed for are remarkably well integrated... and after spending about a week intensively using it to keep up with business email on the road, make hotel reservations, get directions, read the news (on CNN, of course :), and takes notes... this longtime Mac user has been persuaded that this whole iPhone/iPod Touch branch of the family may be more than a passing fad... these things are genuinely useful and game-changing... dare I say it... more so than the Palm was.

Ummmm... and to think, i came here to look at baby pictures... but I couldn't watch the video because I am not "Youtube friends" with George. (Yet another club I need to join.) So instead I picked up an aside about laptops and ran with it...

But to belabor the point... I ended up with a cheapo Acer 15" laptop (yes, with Vista) recently for which I had no use... it retails in the $400 range. I gave it to my uncle... in the process upgrading the RAM and installing some basic software: OpenOffice, FireFox, Adobe Acrobat, etc. My experience was abysmal... I managed to lose even more respect for Acer and Microsoft. The brand new computer was less responsive than a 10 year old Mac PowerBook G3. To upgrade the RAM i had to essentially unscrew the entire case, then "gently" bend and pry various panels off... on the software side... confusing error messages, broken features, and embarrassing interfaces... the experience reinforced why I don't use Windows PCs.

And the uncle.... when I talked to him months later (after he had been using the Acer for a while) about when he would be ready to fully give up the PowerBook G3... he didn't.... he suggested that he needed the Mac to get work done. And asked if there were any newer Macs to be had.... this is in Poland... where everything is very Windows-centric.

All I know is, when you visit the computer store, it seems two bookshelves in a warehouse of accessories seem to be Mac friendly, and every two weeks I invariably see a group email about a Mac user who misplaced their $80 MacBook power adapter.

And seriously - a mouse with one button?

Those smarmy Mac commercials you see on TV (how I hate thee Justin Long) are enough to keep me away from Apple products (not that Microsoft did any better with their WTFWereTheyThinking Jerry Seinfeld commercials). Maybe I'm a little biased since I like to build my own systems from dirt cheap parts on Newegg and TigerDirect, and the idea of proprietory anything makes me sick to the stomach. That said, I'm kinda proud to say I haven't made the jump to Vista yet (quite happy still with Win XP 64-bit). Wake me when MS makes a new OS that doesn't eat up so many resources just sitting there idling with fancy graphics.

Nice to see you back 'on the air' - hey, after viewing your family clip, I felt that it needed something - it needed was to be set to the theme to the Benny Hill Show....so here you go: http://tinyurl.com/8sdcbo
